Members Voice: 2020 has been one heck of a year for SKIDATA South Africa

Due to the excellent and trusting relationships that our commercial and technical teams have with our existing and new potential customers, SKIDATA South Africa finished the year with being awarded official orders for thirteen New Facilities and many technical system upgrades and modernizations, including the installation of security spike barriers and additional equipment from our Existing Customers in the Retail Sector across South Africa.

New Facilities awarded

Six of the New Facilities that were awarded to us were for Harbours on the Western Cape Seaboard at Hermanus, Gordon’s Bay, Kalk Bay, Gansbaai, Struisbaai and Stilbaai, which has opened up a new market segment for our Parking Access technology solutions. Hopefully more to come in 2021!

We have started 2021 with a bang with many quotation proposals being sent out to many potential clients, as they are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and with an upswing in business confidence now that the vaccine rollout has stated, they are requesting updated quotations to start paid parking at their various sites.

We have also been fortunate to have won two New Facilities and they are being installed during March 2021.

We have also tendered for People Event Access technology for a number of stadiums in Africa and we are awaiting the results with bated breath.

Rugby Tour cancelled

Unfortunately, it looks like the British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour to South Africa will not go ahead, as World Rugby do not believe that South Africa will be a safe place for crowds of fans to gather at stadiums for when to tour is scheduled from 3rd July to 7th August 2021, with the proposed “tour” now expected to be hosted in the UK at the national stadiums of England, Scotland and Wales.

Not only will this break the longstanding tradition of the British & Irish Lions touring the southern hemisphere countries of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, it is a huge blow for our South African economy as the expected over 35, 000 visitors who would come to watch some of the matches will not be visiting our shores!

We have all had to learn many new skills during 2020, i.e. how to use Online Zoom and Teams Meetings, trying to meet customers without touching, even when we meet with our family and friends with a fist bump and a wave.

But at least our restaurants and pubs are open so we can at least meet socially without a mask at the table.
